These images are of a custom backsplash designed for Sherry Hayslip and Cole Smith's personal kitchen in Dallas, TX. I started with raw clay and rolled out several slabs and hand-cut each of the tiles according to the design, making each tile unique and beyond the conventional square that we are used to. After I fired each piece to hardness, I reassembled the "puzzle" and hand-painted the Italian landscape on each tile to create the mural you see here. On one wall is the manicured formal garden of the Villa Borghese and on the other wall is the more naturalistic campagna or countryside with Villa Capra or also known as the Villa Rotunda. It was a very educational experience to work with a person of such reknown as Sherry. I am honored that she would value my work and have me contribute to her personal home.
This is a 4 in X 4 in prefabricated tile that I entirely hand-painted (no decals) with commercial glazes and fired, which set the color and design into the tile permanently, making it durable for hundreds of years.
